Choosing a care home for mom, dad, or a loved one is one of the most important decisions a family can make. A facility may look clean and welcoming during a tour, but the real fit depends on care, staffing, communication, safety, routines, and whether the home can truly support your loved one’s needs.

1. What type of residents do you typically care for?

Also ask what care needs would be too high for the facility. A responsible facility owner should be honest about what they can and cannot safely manage.

2. What is included in the monthly cost?

Families should ask for a clear breakdown of pricing before making a decision. Ask what is included in the monthly rate and whether there are extra fees for incontinence care, medication assistance, showers, transportation, special diets, or higher care needs.

It is also important to ask how much notice is given before a price change. Clear pricing reduces stress after move-in.

3. How many caregivers are present during the day and night?

5. What does a normal day look like?

6. How do you communicate with families?

Strong communication can reduce stress after move-in. Ask how often families receive updates, who to call with questions, and whether the facility notifies families about falls, appetite changes, behavior changes, medication concerns, or a change in care level.

7. What happens if care needs increase?

A senior’s needs can change. Ask whether your loved one can stay if mobility declines, dementia symptoms increase, hospice is needed, or supervision needs become higher. This helps you understand whether the facility may be a short-term fit or a longer-term option.

8. Is the facility licensed, and can we review inspection history?

In California, families should feel comfortable asking about licensing. Ask if the facility is licensed as an RCFE, what the licensed capacity is, and whether there have been recent citations or complaints. A transparent facility owner should not be defensive about reasonable questions.

9. Can we visit more than once before deciding?

A second visit can reveal things you may miss the first time. Ask if you can return at a different time of day, observe a meal, meet caregivers, or speak with the owner again. If a facility pressures you to decide immediately, slow down and ask more questions.

10. Why do families choose your facility?

This gives the owner a chance to explain their care philosophy. Listen for answers that mention safety, dignity, communication, consistency, resident comfort, family trust, and experience with specific care needs. The best answers should feel sincere and specific, not like a sales pitch.
